Shirakawa gate, Kumamoto

“The East Exit of Kumamoto station is part of the wider redevelopment of the station, which was aimed at improving wider connectivity requirements in preparation for the arrival of the Kyushu Shinkansen high-speed train.

This canopy was completed in 2011 to coincide with the launch of the Kyushu Shinkansen. It is part of a proposal for the creation of a larger square which resembles a cloud formation on the East side of the station.

The square should be completed by 2018. The design consists of a single horizontal canopy suspended on cylindrical steel columns that, with its shape, leads pedestrians away from the station into a square where the tram connections to the wider city are located whilst protecting them from the elements.”  (Extracted from the Mimoa Project Page I created: here)
